ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY

USE OF TELESCOPES The difficulties attending the uso of telescopes were outlined by Mr. L. G. Wilson in a lecture given to a meeting of the Auckland Astronomical Society at the University College last evening. Mr. Wilson explained that tho diffraction, or bending pf light waves in passing through small apertures, resulted in tho distortion of the imago seen. Tho eli'cct of the diffraction was in inverse proportion to the size of the lons. Mr. Wilson mentioned that the largest telescope in tho world, that at Mount Wilson, California, had a lens with a diameter of lOOin. The difficulties in making a lens of that size, however, wcro very great. The methods by which the errors due to diffraction wero corrected mathematically were also explained by the speaker.
