ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL
NEW ZEALAND TEAM
DRAW AT NEWCASTLE AUSTRALIAN SIDE PLAYED By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received June 11, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, June 11 In iin Association football match at Newcastle yesterday tlio New Zealanclers registered one of their best performances on the tour by playing a drawn game with an Australian eleven, the score being two-all. The weather was ideal and the ground was very soft after heavy rain. The teams were:—New Zealand: Zuill, Graham, Gerrard, Stenhouse, Chapman, Crabbe, Blackie, Barton, Kershaw, Christie and Kay. Australia: Morgan, Evans, Henwood, Forrester, Edggton, Osborne, Wilkinson, O'Brien, Quill, Price and Smith. The New Zealand captain, Christie, won the toss. Play opened quietly. Kay and Kershaw shaped nicely and Zuill again was brilliant, his frequent saves drawing cheers from a fairly large attendance.
New Zealand played a short-passing game. Australia's defence was hard pressed. K>rshaw opened the scoring, the ball striking an upright before entering the net. Tho same player should have scored again, but his kick went high. Quill then equalised for Australia, and the score was unchanged at tho interval. Shortly after the resumption of the game the referee was hooted for a penalty given to Australia, but the advantage was lost when O'Brien's pass went astray. New Zealand missed a further chance to score when Kershaw slipped when he was nearing the goal. Tho visiting forwards were neat in their approach work, but poor shooting spoiled their efforts. Quill also scored Australia's second goal and Kershaw again equalised. Weak finishes marred many fine New Zealand movements, but Zuill gave a polished display.
