Whangarel.—Conditions on Rugby Park were anything but ideal for spectacular football, the ground being very soft and heavy, with intermittent showers. There was a good attendance and the principal senior fixture, Old Boys v. Horahora, proved very interesting and at times quite exciting. It resulted in a draw, each team scoring six points. For Old Boys, Morgan scored two tries, and for Horahora Weils Bcored a try and Jones kicked a penalty goal. On account of the 6tate of tho ground the game resolved itself into a tussle between the forwards. In the second half it was almost impossible to handle the greasy ball and this was realised by both 'teams. In the early stages of the game Davie3, a Horahora forward, retired through injury and was replaced. Tn the first spell the Horahora forwards dominated the game and had Old Boys sorely pressed on several occasions. The hooking of Bindon for Horahora gave his side the ball from the scrum almost continuously. In tho second half tho Old Boys forwards dominated play. For Old Boys, Campbell, Tilly and Wilson did all that could be expected of backs with the conditions and ShcrritT. Hardie and Bradley stood out prominently among an even lot of forwards. For Horahora, Pickering was the outstanding back and h' was a tower of strength to his side. He was well supported by Morgan, Wells and Te Pao. Bindon and McPherson were most conspicuous among a fine lot of forwards. Other senior results were:—Hikurangi, 33. Mangakahia. G; Citr won by default from Miiungnknranieo. SECONDARY SCHOOLS MOUNT ALBERT-KING'S DRAW WIN FOR TAKAPUNA GRAMMAR The first-grado Rugby football competition for Auckland secondary schools was continued on Saturday afternoon by the playing of two matches. Before a large number of people assembled on the Mount Albert ground, Mount Albert Grammar School and King's College played a draw, neither side scoring. There could not have been a fairer indication of the trend of play. Although play did not reach the high standard of team work usually assQciated with secondary schools' matches, it became, nevertheless, most exciting toward the cud. On its own ground, Sacred Heart College lost to Takapunn Grammar School by 12 points to 6. Auckland Grammar School had a bye. MT. ALBERT AND KING'S DRAW For tho first few minutes Mount Albert attacked and Martin rescued lung's by means of a strong line kick. Storey kicked well up tho field and the Mount Albert backs made a passing rush. In this, Martin, the Mount Albert winger, gained possession, ran to near the line and then passed to Hook, who was pushed out at the corner llag. Tho attack was sustained nnd T. Clarko and Moses together pulled King's out of danger. Through mulling the ball. Hook let King's break away in a loose rush, but this was stopped by Storey, and Mount Alhert managed to clear. The Mount Albert backs were heeling the ball from inosrt of the scrums, but- flio opportunities they gave the backs were spoiled by faulty handling. There was no score at half-time. King's began the second spell with a fine combined attack. Mount Albert carried the ball to the other end of the field, and strenuous forward play followed. Clarke, Mount Albert's right wing, found touch live yards short of tho King's line. King's was given relief by a free-kick. Moses cleverly started an attack that had Mount Albert in difficulties, until Martin ran round behind the line and cleared to half-way. Mount Albert next lost two chances of scoring through knocking on. King's was penalised and Hook failed at goal from near the sideline. The King's backs and forwards combined in a thrilling rush, only to see the ball go out behind the line. The game ended shortly afterwards without score. Mr. M. Kronfeld was referee. TAKAPUNA SUCCESSFUL After repeatedly making onslaughts on ♦ho Takapuna line, Sacred Heart was awarded a penalty from which Hare goaled with a splendid long kick. Takapuna attacked, but could not pierce the defence. Eventually, a free-kick enabled Sacred Heart to clear, and Regan gained much ground for his side before being brought down. A Takapuna forward got offside in a scrum in front of the goal and Hare had no difficulty in putting over his penally kick. Excitement was aroused when Kawe, accepting from Nelson, mado a long run that carried hint close to the Takapuna line before ho was tackled. At half-time the score was:— Sacred Heart. 6; Takapuna, 0. A Sacred Heart attack on tho resumption of play was stemmed, and, led by Mnssey, the Takapuna forwards carried play downfield. Bentley mado two strong runs and each time almost got over. Sacred Heart was penalised and Emery opened Takapuna's Bcore. Archer obtained the ball from a scrum and by dummying and making a tricky run ho crossed tho line. Emery's kick fell short. Another Takapuna attack ended in Stevenson taking the ball at halfway and transferring to Valient inc. who ran past several Sacred Heart players for a try. Emery failed to convert. Piny moved up and down the field as each (earn strove to score. Just beforo t,he end of the game Emory goaled again from a penalty, making the final score:—Takapuna, 12; Sacred Heart, 6. Mr. H. D. Craig was referee.
