NATIVE RATES QUESTION

DISCUSSION AT WHANGAREI [from our own correspondent] WHANGAREI, Fridny A report on the deliberations of the eommittco of investigation which sat in Whangarci in connection with the native rate question was read by the clerk, Mr. H. C. Hemphill, at a meeting of the Whangarci County Council to-dav.

The chairman, Mr. L. Webb, said he considered it very wrong for the Government to press the struggling Maoris, most of whom milked only a few cows to make a living. " I consider the Government should have tackled the more important question of Crown land rates," he said. Mr. J. A. S. Mackay said he considered the matter of native rates a very important one. Some of the wealthiest peoplo were Maoris, he said, and there were some with incomes of thousands of pounds who did not pay anv rates.

Mr. Webb said he wished to explain that he was in favour of the native rate question being looked into, but he considered the question of Crown land rates to be much more important.
