LAST MONTH'S FIGURES

SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE COMPARISONS FOR FIVE MONTHS An increase of £34,963, tho largest advance recorded this year, was shown in the customs duties collected at Auckland in May, compared with the amount in. May last year. The collections last month amounted to £178,034, which has been exceeded only once this year, as against £143,671 in May, 1932.

The tot al for the first five months of the calendar year was £580,026, compared w til £800,896 for the similar period of last year, an increase of £79,130.

An increase of £1491 occurred in the combined collection of motor spirit tax ar.d tyre duty made in May, 1933. compared with the total collected in May of last year. This almost oflsets tlie decreases shown in earlier months, arid the five-monthly figures for 1933, £209,386, are only £27S below tho aggregate for the corresponding period in 1932. E;evenue From Sales Tax Sales tax has yielded £102,06S since its imposition on February 9. The amount collected during the first period, from its imposition to the eild of March, was £S2B7; the total in April was £56,625; and last month's yield was £37,157. It is difficult to make profitable comparisons yet, owing to the extended period covered by the first payments, the fact that wholesalers as a class paid their first instalments later than retailing importers, and other factors inseparable from the operation of such an intricate form of taxation. Customs returns in Wellington for the month of May are as follow, the f gures for the corresponding month last year being given in parentheses:—'Net revenue, £157,551 (£147,655); petrol tax, £1*6,996 (£39,025) at sixpence a gallon, £25,039 at fourpence, £13,008 Sit twopence; tyre tax, £2480 (£1536); excise duty on beer, £4661 (£5638); sales tax, £37,806. The figures for the five month* aro:— £777,315 (£878,075); petrol, £298,006 (£264,423); tyre tax, £7267 (£8880); beer, £22,545 (£27,685). Wednesday All sources of revenue collected by the Customs Department at Christchurch showed increases during May as compared with May, 1932.
