CALCUTTA STRIKE
DISSATISFIED CARTERS PUBLIC HEALTH MENACED CALCUTTA. May 29 A short-lived battle between nearly (000 strikers armed with brick-bats and sticks and a small force *of policemen armed with clubs was the first incident of tho strike of the Calcutta Corporation's carters who are dissatisfied with their wages and housing conditions. The strikers tried to prevent nonstrikers from collecting the city's refuse. Tho police made 100 arrests. Numbers of tho strikers and a few policemen were injured. The health of the citizens is seriously menaced as long as the refuse is allowed to rot at the sides of the roads.
