WINTER RACING

{ ■ AUCKLAND MEETING ARRIVAL of visitors caixamakt and omeo LANDMARK SCRATCHED The fields for tho Groat Northern Hurdles ami the Great Northern / Steeplechase, the chief events at the Auckland Kacing Club's Winter Meeting, were further reduced yesterday when last year's Hurdles winner, Landmark, was withdrawn from both races nt 2.5 p.m. Landmark gave himself a knock when racing at Marlborough on May 1- and soreness that supervened made it doubtful whether ] IC would come to Auckland. It was eventually decided that ho should make the trip in company with

his stableniates, Make Up and Miladi, but the fact that be -was again sore yesterday probably influenced his connections to relieve him of his engagements in the big races. Several prominent candidates for the Great Northerns put in an appearance at Ellerslie yesterday, the arrivals in- , eluding Omeo, Callamart, Pan go, Bca- ' con Fire, King Win, C'opey, Sea town, Carfex and/Autumn Dawn. Callamart and Omeo were out doing useful work soon after arrival and both attracted a good deal of attention. Callamart, who is in very solid condition, did steady • pacing 011 the sand and then pulled oh to the grass to sprint home the last three furlongs in 425. As a result of his good second last year Callamart is one of the prime fancies for the Great Northern Steeplechase, but his prospects in the Hurdles do not appear to be so highly esteemed. However, he is one of the proved stayers in the field and may be quite capable of a forward showing. Additional riding engagements for the meeting include:—S. Tremain, Sir Val, Searcher; J. F. Fergus, C'atonia, Grants Opal (Hunt Cup); J. H. McI!no, I>oval . Visitor, Sir Musk.

No rider has yet been engaged for Omeo iu the/Great Northern Steeplechase, but L. Knapp does not anticipate any serious difficulty in securing the services of a suitable pilot. Omeo looks well and is a true stayer, so that ho must be regarded as a possibility, even though he has been a most unlucky horse.

TheJWanganui horse All Supreme was struck out of the second division of the Jcrvois Handicap at 9 a.m. yesterday.

TE AWAMUTU HORSES «■ PROSPECTS AT ELLERSLIE EMANCIPATION AND RURI. [from our own correspondent] ') TE AWAMUTU, Tuesday Fast work at Te Awamutu this morning *as do'no on the course proper next to the rails. The going: was dead. Kanapa (Baker) ran five furlongs in I.C 4-5 and wfca running on well at the finish, The last half-mile took 51 4-ss. Sir Musk (Baker) and Emancipation (Sullivan) had little pace on over the early part of a mile and a-quarter. but completed the journey together nicely in 2.23 4-ss. Run (Baker), on the rails, finished slightly in ..front of Jonathan (McKenzie) at the end of seven furlongs run in 1.33 2-5. Both worked well. Protomint (Rowan) and Transaction (McLaughlin) went away at the mile barrier together, but after going five furlongs in 3.11, Protomint cleared away from his companion to register 1.51 3-5 for the mile. Transaction took 1.55. Goodfellow (McGregor) did not show much dash while working alone over six furlongs in 1.26, and was very sore when pulled up. His prospects get no brighter. Not counting Trishna, who is now located ot Ellerslie. ,Te Awamutu will have six representatives at the Great Northern meeting. . . Kanapa won a race at Taumarunui in December, but since then he has been ten times unplaced and has little form to recommend him in the second division of the» Jervois Handicap. . Sir Musk has shbwn fair form on the fiat this season and in his first and only start over hurdles ran a creditable third at Te Kuiti. With J. Mcßae on him. a slight improvement will find him a possibility in the Penrose Hurdles. The local /Great Northern Hurdles representative Emancipation has done everything saked of him of late. His second in the Brighton Hurdles was a solid effort and. as he is looking better now, should be pro- ' ininent on Saturday. Emancipation will have Lis usual pilot. B. Sullivan. . Protomint./Jonathan and Run figure in the Cornwall Handicap. Protomint, ridden by A. Tinker, will only have to be in a generous humour to be in the picture, riis third at Te Kuiti and his work since sugpest he is Hearing his best and wl jh the track Mo his liking he should find favour. However, in seven starts this season Protomint has been left at the post four times and so there is a risk attached to him. Jonathan, more often jn'the money than out of it. is also engaged in the Members Handicap. Although he promises to da■velop into a really useful horse, Jonathan does not appeal greatly in the Cornwall Handicap and might find those engaged in the Members' Handicap too speedy for him. Por a horse who was still running on tbe hills outride Te Awamutu at the commencement of the season. Run has "'."J, wonderful progress. Owing to his saddle slipping at the Te Kuiti meeting no line was given regarding his ability over a mile find a-quarter. but he has won over nine furlongs, handles heavy to advantage, and is a distinct possibility. W. Cathro//leaves to-morrow foi Auckland with Emancipation and Sir Musk, accompanied by n. L. Russell with Jonathan. G. Paul, with Ruri and Kanapa, will follow on Thursday, and A. Rowan, with I lotomint. on Friday.
