TRAM SHELTER SHEDS
RESPONSIBILITY FOR, COST AUTHORITIES NOT AGREED" A refusal on the-part of the City Council to contribute to the cost of erecting tram shelters gave rise to a discussion at a meeting of the Transport Board yesterday. The council, replying to a suggestion that it should share the cost of building shelters along Tamaki Drive, replied that "the shelter sheds and traffic routes are the responsibility of the proprietors of the transport service and the council is unable to accept any responsibility whatever for the erection of shelters." Asked further to"assist with the erection of a shelter in the vicinity of All Saints' Church, Ponsonby, the council recalled its refusal in 1930 to share the cost of a shelter near the Old Stono Jug, Great North Road, on the ground that " these shelters are erected primarilv for the use of tram passengers." Mr' G. Grey Campbell said the board had laid down a policy that it would not erect shelters unless the local bodies contributed half the cost. He thought the time had arrived when that ruling should be revised. The chairman, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, said that several local bodies had responded to the hoard's appeal, particularly the Mount Eden and Mount Albert Borough Councils. A shelter at the Old Stone Jug, for instance, would be used by other people beside tram travellers.
A Member: By bus passengers. Mr. E. Morton: And by golfers later on. 1 Mr. W. H. Nagle said that because the board had decided in the past to force the local bodies to contribute, that was no reason why it should maintain such: a policy to-day without reference to the merits of each individual case. The council's letters were received.
