POLICE USE BATONS
STRUGGLE WITH BURGLARS MEN TO BE SENTENCED [by telegraph—press association] CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday Three seamen, George Grainger, aged 27, Patrick Gannon, aged 25, and James Tanner, aged 2.5, were to-day charged with breaking and entering the warehouse of the Supply Stores in Colombo Street, on May 25, with intent to commit a crime. Describing the finding of the men inside the shop after midnight, Constable Leith stated in evidence that when looking for handcuffs the beam of his torch was- taken off accused, and Grainger and Gannon made an attempt to get away. A struggle ensued and eventually both men were struck with batons. As soon as they were struck they said they would give in. One of the men admitted breaking into the shop because he was hungry. The men had used pieces of newspaper as torches and the building, which was an old wooden structure, could easily have caught fire. Accused pleaded guilty and were committed for sentence.
