FIFTH DEFEAT
AUSTRALIAN RUGBY TEAM OTAGO UNIVERSITY'S WIN TWENTY-FIVE POINTS TO 3 ALL-ROUND SUPERIORITY [BY telegraph—press association! DUNEDIN, Tuesday The Rugby match between the Australian Universities' team and Ota go University was; played at Carisbrook to-day. Otago proved too strong all rounu and won by 25 points to .3. In spite of rain in the morning the ground was in good order, but the ball became rather greasy and difficult to handle, which probably saved the visitors from a heavier defeat. The visitors have lost all five matches of their tour. Unlike the second test match, in which the Australian forwards more than held their own with the NewZealand vanguard, the Otago forwards showed an all-round superiority, and the local backs showed much more thrust, being well served by Rae behind the scrum, Rao has developed into a high-grade halfback and varies his play cleverly. Uttley made an effective link between Rae and I'ookes. Fookes- was closely watched and was well tackled, but as the game progressed he frequently pierced the defence.
Dunne, on the wing, again demonstrated that lie is one of the best .scoring wing-three-quarters in New Zealand to-day and scored two tries as the result of sheer'determined running. Service, Lopdell, Hamilton and Mclarlane were always in the thick of solid forward play. Apart from Westfield, the fullback, - and Rees, first five-eighths, the Australian backs were unimpressive, and frequently got into trouble by reckless and ill-directed passing.
Otago opened the scoring 10 minutes before half-time, when Rae placed a goal from a penalty. The next score came two minutes later. Fookes secured and, when blocked, cross-kicked to Dunne. The latter fielded cleverly in his stride and raced 25 yards to score at the corner. The kick at goal failed. Otago attacked on resuming, llae sent out. smartly from a scrum. Fookes drew the defence and sent out ■ a long pass to Dunne, who raced past four men and scored at the corner. Ruff failed to convert. Otago held the upper hand for the greater part of the second spell. Rae kicked a penalty goal. Fraser-Smith scored at the corner from a passing rush, Ruff's kick failing. Hamilton added two more tries to Otago's tally, Rae converting both. Australia's only score came from a spectacular passing rush from halfway, Hardman scoring at the corner. Westfield's kick failed.
