ACCOUNTANTS HONOURED

TRIBUTES BY COLLEAGUES A social gathering in honour of Mr. W. H. Hemingway, who is revisiting Auckland after an absence of over 14 years, and Mr. G. W. Hutchison on his re-election as Mayor of Auckland, was held last evening, when there was an attendance of about 60 accountants and business friends of the two guests of honour. Mr. J. M. Elliffe presided. Responding to the toast of his health, proposed by Mr. H. P. O. Twigden, Mr. Hutchison paid a tribute to the work done by the early officebearers of the New Zealand Society of Accountants, particularly in the 'formulation of a code of ethics to govern the profession. He said it had once been a reproach that accountants did not take much part in public life, but in more recent years there had been a growing recognition among members of tho profession of the duties and responsibilities of citizenship. In proposing the health of Mr. Hemingway, Mr. P. G. Baskett paid a tribute to Mr. Hemingway's personality, ability and unbounded ambition. The profession owed a great deal to Mr. Hemingway, who had emphasised tho need for study. Ho was, in fact, one of the "fathers" of accountancv in New Zealand. * Mr. Hemingway, who was cheered on rising, recalled tho many pleasant associations ho had formed during his long residence in New Zealand before departing for Australia and later the United States, and expressed particular pleasure at the success achieved bv men who had been his students 30 and 40 years ago. During the evening a presentation of a pewter cigarette case was made to Mr. Hutchison by Mr. H. W. Shove, and a sot of pipes and a photograph of tho old university college, where ho lectured, were presented to Mr. Hemingway by Mr. Elliffe.
