SOCCER TOURISTS
DEFEAT IN AUSTRALIA NEW ZEALANDERS OUTCLASSED (Received May 23, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 23 A Newcastle and Northern District Association football team overwhelmed the New Zealand touring team yesterday by 7 goals .to 1. The weather was perfect and the attendance excellent. The teams were: New Zealand. — Zuill, Gerrard, Graham, Stenhouse, Christie, Crabb, Barton, Blackie, Baker, Kershaw and Kay. Newcastle. —Morgan, Whitelaw, Henwood, Forrester, Taylor, Coolahan, Wilkinson, Cameron, Quill, Hughes and Bray. The local men were much the better team in the first half. They showed more cohesion, except approaching the interval, when the visitors rjillied brightly. At half-time the score was: Newcastle, 3; New Zealand, 0. In the second half the New Zealanders created a better impression, v. ith neat footwork and splendid combination, but they found the defence too solid and the opposing forwards decidedly "nippy." The best man on the visitors' side was Zuill, whose frequent saves and brilliant and reliable network were applauded. The scorers were: Newcastle. —Hughes (three) and Quill (four). New Zealand.—Kershaw.
