PEACE IN FAR EAST
EXPRESSION OF HOPE AMERICA AND JAPAN (Received May 28, 5,5 p.m.) WASHINGTON, May 27 An expression of hope for peace in the Far East and the world generally, and for a return of prosperity, was contained in a joint statement issued to-day by President Roosevelt and Viscount Ishii (Japan). A message from Tokio says the Japanese War Office officially states that negotiations for an armistice are pro'ceeding and have terminated the fighting in North China.
VIRTUALLY SETTLED DISPUTE OVER RAILWAY MANCHUKUO TO PURCHASE (Received May 28, 5.5 p.m.) SHANGHAI, May 27 The dispute between the Soviet and Japan over the Chinese Eastern Railway, it is announced, has been virtually settled. An agreement lias been reached under which Manchukuo will purchase, through Japan, the Soviet's interests in the railway.
