FIFTY YEARS AGO
EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD GAS AT DEVONPORT The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of May 29, 1883. Devonport (North Shore) was lighted with gas for the first timo on Saturday night last. The gasworks, which havej been erected by the Auckland Gas Company, are centrally situated in the district, on the Lake Road. It may ba questioned whether any place in the colony of the population of Devonport has got the gas laid on, and at the same price, los net per 1000 cubic feet for lighting purposes, and 10s net for, cooking. The first lecture on Latin was delivered last evening by Professor Tucker (professor of English and classics), and was fairly well attended, but in consequence, we suppose, of a lack of acquaintance with the routine of university lectures, more than half of those present were unprovided with text books of the advertised subject (Horace), or manuscript notebooks. At a meeting of the Harbour Board, which is to be held this afternoon, Mr. Stone will move "That the plans ana specifications for the new dock at Calliope Point be immediately forwarded to Wellington for the approval of the Governor-in-Council."
