MERITS OF THE PIG

AN INTELLIGENT ANIMAL The pig is one of the most intelligent of all our farm animals and has proved itself capable of observing the results of his experiences, and of behaving in accordance with the memories of them. Theso memories are by him readily recalled and give him a semblance of wisdom at times uncanny. Of all our domesticated beasts none resembles man in the nature of its tissue so closely as does the pig. It is capable of hoarding fat all over its body, and especially under its skin. The pig is, in consequence, a great source of animal fat for the feeding of man in the temperate and cold regions of the earth, and it is for that purpose that the animal is easily domesticated, has been a companion of civilised man, cared for and fed from timo unknown. It has been Denmark's opportunity to demonstrate that the pig is a source of wealth far more profitable than any gold mine yet discovered. The pig can be reared by smallholders as well as if not better than anybody else. When fed for pork or bacon it needs care and attention to its personal requirements, and to housing as well as to his feeding. No arrangement will be of any value unless it ensures a reward to the feeder, to the breeder, and to the preparer of the pig for the market in the form of pork, ham, bacon, lard, or rendered fat, with full utilisation of all offala.
