FROZEN AND CHILLED SMITHFIELD QUOTATIONS (Received May 28, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, May 27 Following are the latest quotations for frozen and chilled meat, with those of the previous week for comparison:— FROZEN MUTTON

The weekly quotations are based on actual sales of wholesale quantities of carcases of mutton or lamb, of of quarters of beef delivered to Smithfield market and/or London stores. They are compiled by the Quotations Committee, Smithfield.

To arrive at the equivalent ex ship values, one farthing per pound should bo deducted from the prices quoted above. Quotations given represent the average for the week, and are not selected lines, but for parcels fairly representative of the bulk of shipments now on offer.

LAMB MARKET BETTER The Bank of New Zealand has received the following advice from its London office as at tho close of business last week: —Wethers: There is a better inquiry for light-weights. Ewes: Tho market is quiet and unchanged. Lambs: Tho market has improved. There is a good demand. It is thought prices will remain steady at present quotations. Wethers, light, 3d to 4d per lb.; heavy, 2id to 2;} d; ewes, 2d to 3£d; lambs, twos, 5Jd to 6d; eights, 6d to sid; fours, 4|d to 4gd; seconds, sid to 52d. The New Zealand Meat Producers' Board's market report for the week is as follows: —Lambs: Very firm with better prices, especially for heavyweight. Consumption continues cood. Mutton: Wethers, more inquiry for light-weight, but trade generally slow. Ewes remain quiet and unchanged. Beef: Weaker in sympathy with low prices of Argentine chilled beef. New Zealand porkers: Dull with small trade. New Zealand baconers: Market steady at better prices.

WHEAT IN AMERICA WINNIPEG PRICES SOAR (Received May 28. 5.5 p.m.) CHICAGO. May 27 Wheat. —May, 738 cents a bushel; July, 743 cents; September, 76J cents; December, 78} cents. The New York quotation for cash is 85i'cents Wheat opened 4 cents higher, but reacted slightly at the close'at 2\ to 3 cents higher. Corn was 1 cent to lg cents higher. WINNIPEG, May 27 An opening surge of buying which sent wheat futures soaring to higher levels to-day was maintained, and at the close} there were gains of to 2J cents.
