MATCHES AT WHANG AREI TEAMS TROUBLED BY FLOODS' Rugby football competitions were continued in the various country centres on Saturday. Tho following accouiits were forwarded by correspondents of the Herald: — Whangaroi.—Favoured by a beautiful warm f.tternoon and an absence of wind, there was a largo attendance at Rugby Park. Notwithstanding a week of almost incessant rain, the playing field was in very good order although heavy. The chief attraction was the senior game. Old Boys versus City, which was won by Old Boys by 5 points (a try by Morgan, converted by Tilley) to 3 (try by Holmwood). A. B. Campbell, Old Boys centre-threequarter, received an injury within ten minutes of the commencement of the game and retired for a short time, but went on again. He received another injury about half-way through the second Bpcll and retired for the remainder of tho match. On account of the heavy ground, tho game was mostly a forward one, although in tho last 20 minutes both sides made it as open us possible. For the winners, Sherriff was a tower of strength in the forwards, Poolman, Symes, Tilley and Hollows were also prominent. For City, Kerr, at fullback, was the outstanding back, finding the line with 6plendid accuracy. McKenzie, Jones and Proctor also played well. Several of tho country teams had difficulty in fulfilling their engagements owing to the rain. The Hikurar.gi Club, on account of several of its players being isolated by flood-waters, could muster only 11 of its regular players against Maungakaramca. White Star and Patumahoe, two teams , which registered wins the previous Saturday, were seen in a fast, hard game at Patumahoe. The ball was kept well in play, each side handling freely. Development of the finer points would have made it a spectacular match. As it was, close scoring and breezy play gave zest to participants and barrackers alike. A rush to tho corner gave Star the opening try, Kidd touching down. McAlpino evened matters with a penalty goal for Patumalioo. McKenn and Brown worked the blind side, Brown crossing with the ball at his toe and touching down. After the interval Coutts broke past two Star backs in a long dash down the wing and scored. A forward rush, in which Kidd made an opening and McKean scored, gave Stars the match, 9—G, a penalty kick at goal by _ McAlpine in front of the posts later failing. In the other senior game Old Boys defeated Kia Ora by 9 points to G. Junior games resulted:—White Star, 14, Ramblers, 0: Kia Ora, 5. Old Boys, 4. Tho first matches were played under the newlyformed Franklin Secondary Schools' Athletic Association. In the seniors St. Stephen's defeated Pukekoho Technical High School by 14 points to 0 and in the juniors High School beat St. Stephen's by 9 to 5. Waiuku.—Tho first games of tbo second round of the Waiuku Union's competitions wore played. City is still unbeaten, with four wins. City defeated Aka Aka by 11 points to 6. For City, James scored a try and Jackson scored two and converted one. Masters scored a try and Ewens kicked a penalty for Aka Aka. Ofaua beat Waipipi by 12 points to 3. Xo points were scored in either of the junior games, which were between City and Glenbrook and Otaua and Aka Aka. Thames. —Keen interest was displayed in the Rugby games at Rhodes Park. In tho senior competition a hard forward struggle, with occasional flashrß of back play, was witnessed in the HautapuLeamington match, the former winning by 9 points to 3. For Hautapu A. Miller and Pcake scored tries and W. Holmes kicked a penalty goal. Hooper scored for Leamington. Northern and United seniors met at Leamington, the former winning by 10 points to G. Jj. Chitty and E. Shaw scored tries for Northern and Chitty converted both. For the losers S. Wells scored and Hev;tt kicked a penalty goal. Juniors: United, 3, Northern, 3; Hautapu, 4, Leamington. 3. Third grade: United, 6, Northern, 0; Leamington, 9, Hautapu, 8. Morrinsville.—Kereone, the unbeaten senior team, continued its run of successes by beating Eastern by 14 points to 5 after a hard and even forward game. G. Leeson, Jeime and Bodmin 6cored for Kereone. Aitken converting one try and kicking a pc-nulty goal. Chrystall scored and Mclvor converted for Eastern. Terriers beat United by 14 points to 8 after a display of fast and open play. Stirling (2), Heeps and Anderson scored for Terriers, Heeps converting one. Park and Gray scored for United, Lipscombe converting one. Juniors: Kereone, 12. Eastern B. 0; Old Boys, 19, United, 0; Tahuna, 17, Terriers, 11. Te Awamutu.—The Waipa Rugby Union's senior, junior and third grade championship competitions were continued in fine weather. Principal interest centred in the senior match between Waikeria, tho unbeaten team, and Pirongia. <A fast and hard game resulted in a win for Waikeria by 11 points to 6. The Waikeria. score was a penalty goal, a. converted try and an unconverted try, D. Oliver kicking both goals. For Pirongia Jordan kicked two penalty goals. Te Awamutu seniors, after being hard-pressed early, notched a win over Tokanui by 14 points, tries by Stanford and Turney (2), a conversion and a penalty goal by B. Quin. to 0. In tho junior grade the two unbeaten teams, Te Awamutu and Pirongia, had a. gruelling game, victory being gained in the final three minutes by Pirongia, by 13 points (Laurence and Bell tries, conversions and penalty goal), to 12 (two tries by Sutherland and one by Hutchinson, and a penalty goal by Walker). Ngutunui bad an easy win over Tokanui by 37 points to 0. To Mawhai notched its first, win by defeating Arohena by 5 points (a try by Tortsen, converted) to 0. Tauranga.—The Rugby Union's competitions were continued in fine weather. The Jordan Cup seniors match between Mataknna and Athletics was keenly contested and was won by Matakanu by 0 points to 0. Hamilton.—The senior football matches played at Rugby Park attracted a fair a - tendance. On No. 1 ground ft very close contest, between Frank ton and Maris t was witnessed and the score, three points cadi, provided a fair indication of the nature of the game. Te Aroha.— I The attendance at tho Rugby football matches in the Waihou Domain was well maintained. One of the hardest forward games of the season was the Hot Springs-City senior fixture, which resulted in many minor accidents to players. The games on the whole were keen and of a fair standard. The home team won by 20 points to 3, but there was a decided improvement in the play of the Papakura team upon last week, and the score hardly indicates the general form. T\ho same could also bo said of the match between Hunua ana Drury. Drury won by 37 poins to 0, but from a spectators' point of view Hunua was not badly outclassed. Drury was an excellent team and the finish I of all its movements was the factor which contributed mostly to its largo score. Junior matches resulted: Drury, 24.
