OVERCOATS STOLEN
TAKEN FROM MOTOR-CARS THREE YOUNG MEN CHARGED "The accused do not deserve leniency, and it is only as a result of the probation officer's statement that they are being given a chance," said Mr. W. 11. McKean, S.M., in the Police Court on Saturday, when two Albert Henry Doyle, aged 22, barman, and William Joseph Dovle,' aged 20, admitted a series of thefU from motorcars parked in the city. Albert Henry Doyle appeared on 15 charges, while there were nine counts against his brother. A third man, Samuel Berryman, aged 21,' labourer, admitted stealing one coat. Mr. Aekins represented accused.
Detective-Sergeant McHugh said the Do vies had been stealing from motorcars between April 26 and May 19. In every case they had pawned the coats and spent the money after dividing it. Both lived with their mother, and Will iam Joseph Doyle was alreadj 7 on probation. The brothers had been unemployed for only two months, and apparently had been stealing most of the time. They obtained £2 18s 6d for the coats, only five of which had been reported stolen. Accused bad given Detective Slater every assistance in clearing up the matter. Mr. McHugh said Berryman, who had been concerned with only one theft, had been led by the Doyles. He had, however, been in trouble before. The probation officer, Mr. W. J. Campbell, said many years ago the Doyles' father bad left home, leaving the mother to bring up the children, who had never had much of a chance. It was a sad case, as the position would be serious for their mother and their invalid sister if they were sent away. They could go share-milking if given a chance. The Doyle brothers were placed on probation for three years, and were ordered to make restitution of £2 16s between them. Berryman was convicted and ordered to come .up for sentence within 12 months if called on. He was ordered to pay 2s as restitution.
