ASSAULT AND THEFT
OFFENCES IN PARK TERM OF IMPRISONMENT [by telegraph —press association] NEW PLYMOUTH, Saturday Found guilty of assaulting a girl aged 17 and stealing a purse containing £1 William James Newman appeared in the Supreme Court to-day for sentence. He was sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment on the first charge and to 12 months' on the second, the terms to be concurrent. The girl's story was that Newman approached her while she was sitting on a bench in Kawaron Park. He asked her for a cigarette and she refused. He seized her by the wrist and struck her on the side of the head, rendering her unconscious.
