CONTESTS IN COUNTRY

WHANGAREI'S OPENING DAY ALL BLACK AT TE AWAMUTU Rugby football competitions were continued "in the various country centres on Saturday. The following accounts were forwarded by correspondents of the Heu.VLD : Whangarel.—The opening of the Rugby season took place in unpleasant weather conditions. In Rugby Park, Whangarei. there was a very good attendance and the Mayor, Mr. W. Jones, officially opened the season and kicked the first ball. In doing so he congratulated the union on the success of the past year and expressed the hope that the present season would be most successful and that each player would maintain the high traditions of Rugby. The chief attraction was the senior match, Hikurangi, last year's champions, against _ Horahora. the former winning by 19 points to 3. Owing to the heavy condition of the ground the game was a forward one. Both teams played interesting football for tho initial match of tho season and tho score scarcely indicates tho merits of the teams. J. Hamilton again proved himself the outstanding scoring man of tho Hikurangi team, being responsible for ten points. For the winners J. Hamilton kicked a penalty goal, scored one try and converted two' tries, Laurie scored one try and White two tries. For Horahora Pickering kicked a penalty goal Other results were:—Senior: City. 16, Mangakahia, 4; Old Boys, 12, Maungakaramea, 3. Juniors: Horahora, 11, Old Boys, 0: High School, 27. City, 0; Onerahi, 12, Public Service, 3. Third grade: Horahora, 3, Hikurangi, 3.

Pukekohe.—The Pukekohe Rugby Union's championship competitions opened under very wintry weather conditions. There was a keen wind and showers of cold rain were frequent throughout the afternoon, but the fields were in surprisingly good condition. The standard of play in the two senior matches was splendid for the first game of the season, and the feams proved of fairly even strength. The main attraction was tho meeting of Old Boys and Patumahoe. The former won by 13 points to 3, but the score hardly does Patumahoe due credit. In the first half Old Boys made it a back game whenever the opportunity' presented itself, but in the second half the Patumahoe forwards broke up attempts at such movements. Tries were scored for Old Boys by Jamieson, Wolfborough and Hewitt and two wero converted by Fallows. For Patumahoe a try was scored by Howe. Ramblers secured a victory by 9 points to 3 against the Kia Ora Maori team, but the latter provided some very bright flashes of back play. Nathan scored two fine tries for Ramblers and G. Brownlee also scored. Kia Ora's try was secured by B. Hapi after a fine piece of forward play. Cartwright and Dix displayed very good form in the Ramblers' backs and Pleydell and Gurney did some good work in the pack. Junior matches resulted as follows:—Old Boys, 18, Ramblers, C; White Star, 11. Patumahoe, 0. Waiuku.—A very good standard of football under very unpleasant weather conditions was seen at Waiuku in the first series of matches in the Waiuku Rugby Union's competitions. Hamilton.—The Hamilton Rugby Union's Sage Cup competition, which opened at Rugby Park Inst week, was continued. Owing to heavy rain overnight the ground was fairly soft, but the standard of play showed an appreciable improvement. It was interesting to note the good form being shown by the younger players, particularly the forwards, and it seems likely that Hamilton will have good material available when the representative fixtures come round.
