In Vienna the authorities ensured the substitution of a peaceful stroll for the customary Socialist parade by training guns on the, streets and blocking the main thoroughfare with barbed wire entanglements. The public services in Madrid were paralysed. Banks, offices and shops were closed and traffic suspended, but the day passed peacefully. In Oxford University students marched in the streets, shouting, "We will not fight." Two thousand unemployed in Glasgow had a conflict with the police and disorganised the traffic. There were the usual May Day celebrations in London.
