FATAL ACCIDENT

SURGEON THE VICTIM CAR HITS SAFETY-ZONE MELBOURNE. May 1 Mr. Robert Hamilton Russell, aged 73, who was recognised throughout the world as a great figure in modern surgery, was fatally injured when a motor-car he was driving crashed into a safety-zone pillar. Mr. Russell had both his legs broken and-received head injuries. Ho died in hospital. Mr. Russell, who was a bachelor, qualified in London as a surgeon in 1884. He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (England) and was one of the founders of the Royal Collego of Surgeons of Australasia, having been a leading surgeon in Melbourne for a great many years. He had always practised as a surgeon and won worldwide recognition as the result of an operation ho devised for the cure of hernia in infants. This operation was adopted by surgeons practically all over the world. Mr. Russell also devised an operation for hydatids. A keen musician, he was interested in practically all the musical societies in Melbourne. The pedestrian safety zones in Melbourne, unlike those in Auckland, are not raised above the level of the road. They are indicated by markings and have at each end a pillar bearing a light.
