MORE RAIL TRAFFIC

BUSINESS AT TAURANGA [from our own correspondent] TAURANGA, Monday The railway traffic revenue at Tauranga for the year ended March 31. 1933, showed an increase, compared with the previous 12 months, in spite of the fact that fares and freight rates were reduced and that Easter bookings were not included in the past year, as Easter was later than usual. The total number of outward passengers was 14,755, against 13,978 in 1932, and tho revenue from tickets £4153, against £3918. Outward goods traffic receipts increased from £5902 to £7642. The total revenue from outward and inward traffic showed an increase of £9lO. Tho increase in outward parcels traffic was due largely to the increase in the citrus and fruit industry, and this is a traffic which is likely to increase in view of tho large number of citrus, trees which are now reaching tho bearing stage.- A feature in the parcels section was tho large number of cases of passion fruit which were sent from thisi district to as far away as In-, vercargill. Another big item in the parcels traffic was tho consignment of cream from tho Tauranga -station' to Fraukton. Other goods, outward. , in-r----creased by 776 tons, which was largely, accounted for by tho, increased output from tho local butter fa'ctory. The total outward revenue' showed an in-* crease of £2326 over the previous year. Tho exports of kumaras and maizo have shown a steady increase every year. Maizo is trucked to places all over the North Island at a special rate. It should bo noted that the Tauranga station outward traffic records are restricted to the area from tho Papamoa station .to Tauranga. Tho traffic westward of Tauranga station, from Otmnoetai, To Puna. Omokoroa, Apata. Pahoia and Aongateto is ail credited to the Katikati station.
