THE QUOTA OR COMMON SENSE
Sir, —I submit tho following suggestions in regard to the better marketing of New Zealand butter, believing that in'them lies the means of avoiding the quota system. The first suggestion is the division of tho country into four paits, from the Far North to Pukekohe; the next to the south of the Waikato; the third Taranaki to Wellington; and the fourth tho South Island; with the idea ;that the first division shall start its milking season, say, in June, the second in September, the third in December and the fourth in March. By this apportioning of the year a steady supply of butter is assured, in place of a flush season in all parts simultaneously and long storage of big consignments of butter either awaiting shipment in New Zealand or consumption in England. At the same time there is • room for much improvement in smaller matters. Stricter • Government inspection of all farms should bo enforced. There is no remedy for indifferent cream. Refused by one factory it is accepted by another. Furthermore, in one small district alone, a district not 50 miles from the rail, as many as four separate dairy factories have lorries on the road in competition, for, in many cases, small supplies. This ridiculous overlapping obtains not only in this district but in many throughout tho country. Provided, however, the control of the four divisions I have suggested can be placed in capable hands on a co-operative basis, better times must surely follow. Advance N.Z.
