MOTOR CAR SKIDS
■ —O" y CRASH INTO TRAM POLE TWO OCCUPANTS INJURED VEHICLE ALMOST WRECKED Skidding on the wet road surface in Hobson Street, near the Victoria-Street intersection, shortly before 7.30 o'clock last evening, a motor-car containing three men crashed sideways against a tramway centre polo and was almost wrecked. The driver escaped unhurt but the two passengers received injuries which necessitated their removal to the Auckland Hospital. Mr. Leslie Goodwin, aged 29, a waterside worker, of 29 Alexander Street, Eden Terrace, who was thrown out of the car by the force of the impact, received injuries to the back, while Mr. Noel Donaldson, aged 27, of 36 Bright Street, Eden Terrace, who was apparently thrown against, a fitting of the car, received concussion. The car, a five-seater open model, was travelling down Hobson Street, and when about 50 yards above the Victoria Street intersection, began to skid and became out of control. The car swung to the centre of the-read, the back striking the pole with terrific force. The body work was crushed and the back axle forced out of place. One of the doors was also wrenched off. A St. John ambulance was summoned and the injured men were taken to the Auckland Hospital. Their condition late last evening was not considered to be serious. Only a few minutes before the accident, a City fire engine, proceeding to a fire in the Gaunt Street tram depot, also slridded in almost the same place, the driver having to swerve to the inside of a safety zone in order to right the vehicle.
