Avondalo yesterday, when the course proper, with the poles out 40t't., tlie inner grass and the plough wero all in use. On the course proper Prolyxo and Eager Rose jumped away just after passing the hnlf-milc disc, Prolyxo gaining a slight advantage. which she increased to about eight lengths at the finish, the last three furloncs taking ;t7s. Prolyxo hit out in very pleasing style, but Eager Hose was evidently carried off her lees in {lie earlier stages. On the inner grass Gigantic beat Delrain over live furlongs in I.C. Gigantic did his ■work nicely, but 13elraiu. who hns not been overtaxed Binco winning t\t Wlnuijfarei. was in need of a fast work-out.

Biform ran five furlongs in 1.10, increasing the speed to record 3S 2-5s for the last three furlongs. He appears to be in good order tor Jus engagement to-day, Hampton Park was going comfortably throuisnout while running five furlongs in 1.4 2-5. He bears a solid appearance and is noiv at the top of his form. On the plough Whakapara jumped away just after passing the six furlongs and ran i tho five, in 1-2 4-5. Although he liact a flying start it was a good effort and there is evidently little amiss with his condition.

Golden Sceptre was going freely at the end of half a mile in 525. This gelding has enoug h speed to show up among the maidens to-day. Grand Tea worked solidly and sprinted up the straight. He is in good condition. British Columbia was holding Alloy safely at the end of three furlongs in 38 l-ss. British Columbia could have done better. He gives the impression that ho is steadily improving.

Joralhan and Linieen worked solidly over two rounds and quickened at th«> end to run three furlongs in 41 l-ss. Jonathan is in good order for the Whau Handicap to-dav. Linieen may be raced on tho second day of the Avondale meeting. Lady's Boy ran three furlongs in 3Ss. He is working nicely and is fit.

By winning the President s Handicap at Ellerslie Carfex added £2OO to his winning account for the season, making the total £621. By running third Aga Khan raised his total to £494. Carfex looks particularly bright and this morning was out doing light exercise. Althaugh still eligible for hack races, Carfex will contest the open events at the Egmont meeting. He is not a big fellow and his trainer is not inclined to favour his chances under the weights he would be asked to carry in the hack class. Kawera horses were unsuccessful at the Feilding meeting, Chief Line and Davistock being the only ones to gain place-money. Chief Line was generally voted unlucky in his race on the first day. Davistock ran two good rc.ces. but met more than his match in Takakua. a very consistent performer. Miss Cavendish received a kick while at the post on the second dav and the injury will probably prevent her from stinting at the Hawera meeting. This morning all fast work wps performed on the trial grass, which was slightly holding after recent rain. March Alone, who has been on the easy list for a while, was galloped four furlongs with the maiden St. Clara, the two finishing together in 525. Ccpey, looking in good condition, did strong pace work over rv couple of circuits. Awaken and Gibraltar were companions in a gallop over six furlongs. Starting slowlv over the first furlong, they completed the .iourney in 1.20, after taking 53's for the first half-mile. Tenacre showed signs of lameness alter doing exercise work. . , , Wenthervme and _ Icier sprinted smartly ovr three furlongs in 38i*. Haunui did three-quarter pace work. Puschiera is still being kept at easy cxerC) The maiden Grey Papa went well with Attentive in a gallop over half a mile, shading her opponent at the finish in olis.

VETERAN RIDER'S SUCCESS TWO WINS AT RICCARTON J. W. Jennings, who was associated with the large dividends paid by The Masquerader in the Autumn Nursery Handicap and by Princess Argosy in the Great Autumn Handicap at Riccarton on Tuesday, is a veteran among the riders, but lie retains Ins abilitv to a marked degree, being particularlv 'alert at the barrier. After being identified' with the West Coast, he went to Riccarton some years ago as a trainer, hut lie retired from that department recently, handing his team to his son in order that lie might devote his attention to riding. Win-and-placc tickets would be 011 sale at adjoining windows and all of the businesf would be done on the electric machine. fo that there would be no delay in making the final adjustments.
