AUSTRALIAN OUTLAWS

CENTENARIAN'S MEMORIES WORKED WITH NED KELLY A personal association with the notorious Ned Kelly was recalled recently by Mr. James Clarke, of Albury, Australia, who celebrated * his 100 th birthday recently. Mr. Clarke said that 51 years ago he agreed with a Mr. Jones, of Wangaratta, to go with him on a steamthreshing plant to feed: his machine for two seasons. It was then that he first became acquainted with Ned Kelly, who was cutting bands for him on the machine. "He was the best band-cutter I ever had on any threshing machine," said Mr. Clarke. The centenarian also said that he and 16 teamsters were held up by Power, the bushranger, between Avenel and Seymour. Power stepped out from a hiding place, and, brandishing a pistol in each hand, called on them to halt, ordered 1 all to dismount from the waggon, and put down their cash in one heap. Power ordered them to walk backwards for 40 or 50 yards. Then he gathered the money. However, he took only half of each man's money.
