CYNEWULF'S POETRY
Mr. Kenneth Sisam, secretary of the Clarendon Press, delivered recently at the rooms of the British Academy, the biennial Gollancz memorial lecture. The president, Dr. J. W. Mackail, was in the chair. The subject of the lecture, was " Cynewulf and His Poetry." The date and locality of the poet were discussed in the light of linguistic evidence, which points to the poems having been written north of the Thames, in Northumbria, or possibly Mercia, at some time in the ninth century, thus carrying on the tradition of literature between Alcuin and Aldred. Their subjects are not Biblical, as at an earlier period, but are chosen from the legends of the saints. The author was careful to record his name in runes, his management of which was examined in some detail. Mr. Sisam comes from Auckland and was Rhodes Scholar in 1910.
