MODERN RUG-MAKING

Rug-making iB quite one of the most fascinating, restful and rewarding home crafts. For a rug made at home is very durable, warm and soft, and can be made to harmonise with any colour scheme. A modern geometrical design is best, and is very simple to make. The canvas can be bought ready-stencilled with a design, or you can make your own. It is possible also now to buy rugwool cut up ready into short pieces, which is a great saving of labour, and you will then only need to get a rughook and commence. Begin at one end, turn in the canvas and work the first row through tho double thickness. This helps to strengthen the rug and gives a neat edge. Work in rows across the width

from right to left and let tho worked part fall into your lap. The ordinary rug-hook method used is as follows: Fold short piece of wool in half and hold between finger and thumb of left hand. Push hook under double tread of canvas until past the latchet, catch loop of wool and draw back under double thread. Push hook and latchet back through wool loop and catch hook round the two ends held by fingers. Finally, draw hook back, bringing ends through, and tighten knot by pulling ends. Work each stitch in this manner; practice gives speed. Finish end of rug through doubled canvas. When completed, trim pile even with scissors and brush well to remove fluff. Neaten back with webbing.
