PETROL TAX REFUND

FALSE CLAIMS MADE FINE OF £lO ON OFFENDER Two charges of making false claims under the Motor Spirits Taxation Act were admitted by Samuel Francis Ford in the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M. Douglas B. Walker, an officer of the Post and Telegraph Department, said 011 January 25 he received an application from defendant for a rebate of petrol duty on 1173 gallons of petrol. The rebate, which was for the quarter ended December 31, totalled £29 6s 6d. Invoices were produced by defendant,. but it was revealed that 123 gallons had been used in a motor-car, and that no rebate on that quantity was due.

Constable Hughes said that accused made a statement in which he said he was manager for a water-taxi firm, and was also part owner of a taxienb. His wife had made out the claim, but he had signed it.
