CLEARING STRATFORD LINES
HUGE SLIPS AT TUNNEL GOOD PROGRESS MADE '' DATE FOR GOODS SERVICE [BY TELEGRAPir —OWN CORRESPONDENT^ NEW PLYMOUTH, Friday As far as can be estimated at pre» sent, and provided the weather doed not interfere unduly with the work of clearing the slips at the Okahukurai tunnel on the Stratford Main Trunk railway, the line will be ready for re* sumption of goods service by May 8. Two huge slips brought down during the heavy rains of a few weeks ago blocked each end of the tunnel. The slip on the Ohura sicle has been cleared and the rails which were torn up have been relaid to the tunnel. A layer of silt about 2ft. deep was deposited through the tunnel. A section of 10 chains of the tunnel at the Ohura end has been cleared. At the OkahukurS end debris has been removed to within a chain of the entrance of the tunneL At the Ohura end, day and night shifts are being worked by large gangs of men. Washed in from the Ohura entrance for 40 chains there lies in the! tunnel a log a chain long and 2ft. in' diameter. Once the men reach it, howw ever, the log is not expected to much trouble. So far no accurate estimation of thd date on which passenger service will be commenced is available.
