UNPAID COUNTY RATES
POSITION AT WHANGAREI MATTER FOR INVESTIGATION [BY TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL REPORTER] WHANGAREI, Friday Matters affecting the Whangarei County were brought before the Hon. E. A. Ransom, Minister of Lands, this evening. On behalf of the county council it was stated that £996 was outstanding in rates by occupiers of Crown land and, as the Department was collecting a large portion of dairy cheques, the council asked that the Government do something to bring about an arrangement. Mr. Ransom promised to go into the question of outstanding rates. He had been surprised to learn, in visiting the north, the largo amounts which were owing to county councils. Reference was made to the advantage taken by farmers tinder Sections 45 and 50 of the Valuation Act, whereby those who were able to pay the fees were able to get revaluation. Mr. Ransom said he had already prepared a bill to deal with this question and hoped to be able to place it before Parliament next session.
