RAILWAY TO WHARF
WHANGAREI BOARD DISPUTE APPEAL TO MINISTER [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] WHANGAREI. Friday The Whaugarei Harbour Board today received a letter from the district railways engineer, Auckland, stating that, as advised by the general manager of railways, the Harbour Board would be required to pay the cost of nil sidings to bo provided on the railway land and on the wharf, in connection with the working of the wharf at Kiororoa. It was not proposed to retain the double line between Whangarei and Kioreroa, and provision had been made for tablot-lockod points from the main line. The estimated cost of completing tho sidings from tho main line to the beginning of the wharf was £7OO, but if tho board supplied labour tho cost would be reduced to £3OO for the siding and £l9O for the lowering of tho rails from tho railway approach to tho level of the wharf. The secretary of tho board. Mr. W. M. Fraser, saicl lie had replied that tho board had decided, quito definitely that it would not spend any money on the work, except to lower tlie rails. The chairman, Mr. J. A. Finlnyson, said there was no reason why tho department should ask tho board to bear tho cost of £3OO of the siding. Tho b6nrd should fight to the last ditch against such a course. Mr. L, A. Johnson said it appeared that tliis Bailway Department was avoiding its liability and would collect all the revenue from tho siding. It was decided to refer the matter to the Minister of Railways, and also to the Hon. E. A. Hansom when he arrives in Whancarei.
