FIFTY YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD TOWN HALL AND LIBRARY The following are extracts from th® New Zealand Herald of April 20,• 1883: ' At last evening's meeting of the City Council it was decided to instruct the city engineer to report to the next council meeting as to the available sites (the property of the city), suitable for a Town Hall and Free Library. In moving the motion, Mr. Montague said it was a question whether the Free Public Library and the Town Hall should be under the safe roof. The gift of Sir George Grey, the bequest of Mr. Costley and the accessions to the existing library, had opened up aspects of the whole question! In point of fact, every day was showing that the responsibility of the council was becoming greater in respect of its duty to the public. This afternoon the funeral of the late Mr. Edward Costlev takes place. have already recommended that the children attending the Orphan Home, Parnell, and those in attendance at the Training School, Kohimarama, should be present. It is also to be hoped that the funeral will be as largely attended by the general -public as possible, i° r the memory of a man who has so richly endowed seven useful institutions in our midst, deserves to be remembered with kindly affection. There is still, we are sorry to hear, a hitch In the matter of the proposed lease of land, or rather water, from the Harbour Board to the projected company which is to erect a freezing chamber with storage for frozen meat, and so render Auckland the emporium for this trade in the North Island.
