MOTOR-CYCLE TRAGEDY

LOSS OF TWO LIVES CONSTABLE AND A BABY A constable and a baby, 19 months old, received fatal injuries in a motorcycling accident at Newtown, Sydney, on tlio night of April 8. Constable Stephenson was on his way to the Newtown Stadium, on duty, with a number of other policemen. On leaving a patrol car ho walked to the rear and round the back of it. A motorcycle and side-car camo along and crashed into hitu. The baby was in tho side-car with a relative. After striking the constable the cycle and sidecar ran into an iron railing. The roadway at the spot is about four feet above the footpath. The baby was thrown through tho railing on to tho hard footway below. Other police at once ran to tho assistance of the constable and the baby. An ambulance took Constable Stephenson to hospital. The baby was beyond aid. Constable Stephenson, who was 47 years old and a widower, served throughout the war, and won tho Distinguished Conduct Medal. He was a first-rate amateur boxer, and took third place ,in the hurdle race at the police sports recently.
