DOMINION'S POLICY
CARE IN DECISION URGED ADVICE BY MR. COATES [bt TELF.GRAm —OWN" correspondent] DAEGAVILLE, "Wednesday Reference to the export of butter' and to proposals for regulating supplies to Britain was made by the Ri< Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister of Finance,in an address to liis constituents ate Ruawai yesterday. Mr. Coates counselled tho producers to examine the whole position with care. Ho would not be dogmatic as to which policy was the wisest. New Zealand had rested a considerable power, and responsibility in tho Dairy Produce Board as representing the industry and the voice of the industry would, of course, have the most careful consideration of the Government. It was up to the producers and the country as a whole to look very carefully into tho position and to examine alternative possibilities. The question was whether it would be wise to regulate exports to tho United Kingdom for the purpose of raising prices or preventing a further decline, continued Mr. Coates. Tho policy suggested was one of balancing supplies with market requirements. Tha method of regulating production by supply and demand was one that caused much hardship and was in many ways unsatisfactory. In Britain therewas a growing tendency to accept Tegulation of quantities for the purpose of maintaining more orderly marketing, conditions. This development was one which New Zealand could not afford to> ignore. "It is possible," said Mr. Coates*. - "that in rejecting regulation of exports! to the United Kingdom we are doing, the wrong thing. We must keep i»:• mind the attitude of the Britisht farmers and it is clearly in our owa,j interests to work in co-operation withjj the Government, of. the United King;) dom."
