RELIEF IN NEWMARKET
USE OF SPECIAL FUNDS BOROUGH COUNCIL'S WORK The funds established by the Newmarket Borough Council to assist the unemployed were the subject of comment in reports submitted to the council last evening. The Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, presided. The Mayor said that, in addition to the work which the council had been able to find for the majority of unemployed in the district, the families of unemployed men, as well as others in distressed circumstances, had been assisted by means of ration orders and grants from the special fund created by means of Sunday evening entertainments. Advances were made to the men to enable them to purchase boots and clothing, the sums being repaid at the rate of Is a week. I)urine: the planting season applicants wero provided with sufficient seeds and plants to crow vegetables. Mr. H. Wilson, treasurer, gavo details of the operation of the funds during the past year, and said the No. 2 fund had a credit balance of £219. From the No. 1 fund, 21G families had been assisted by 813 grocerv orders, 54 meat orders and 415 fuel orders, the value being £568.
