BACHELOR COMMITTEE

Spoaking at the banquet in connection with the jubilee celebrations of the Macandrew Road School, Dunedin, Mr. AV. J. Strong referred to a school committee with which ho had been associated at Bannockburn, in Central Otago. This was a rather remarkable committee, ho said, because it was composed of five bachelors. The people of the district had not been satisfied with the way tho married men conducted the affairs of the school, so they had elected a committee of bachelors, and there was always a keen fight at tho elections with the married men trying to regain membership on the committee and tho bachelors doing their best to keep them out. The story was rounded off by a member of tho audience, who stated that there was still a large proportion of bachelors on that committee.
