MISS BATTEN'S CRASH

SAND IN THE ENGINE A MISFIRE AND STOPPAGE CALCUTTA, April 17 Miss Jean Batten, the Auckland girl who is attempting to fly to Australia from England, suffered severe shock, necessitating medical aid, when her aeroplane turned a somersault and crashed near Karachi. The reason why tho machine could not be discovered from the air was because friendly Baluchi tribesmen of Bela, fearing the machine would be damaged by the sandstorms that were raging, protected it with camel cloths. They completely camouflaged it, but neglected to cover the engine, into which sand penetrated, causing it to misfire and stop after Miss Batten's departure for Karachi.
