; UNIVERSITY CONTESTS ' CANTERBURY WINS SHIELD ; ■ — ; — SUCCESS IN FOUR SECTIONS I SUPERIORITY AT TENNIS Tlio annual -New Zealand' University tournament was • broliglit to a conclusion yesterday when tho tennis finals were decided at tlio Stanley Street courts, and a ball was held in the evening. Prior to yesterday Canterbury had scored sufficient points to win the tournament shield, and, by winning four of the five tennis titles, it increased its lead considerably. r Canterbury won the rowing, the athletic shield, the swimming cup and the tennis cup, scoring 25J points, 10i ahead of its nearest rival, Otago, winner of the boxing shield, which scored loi points. Victoria, 9 points, won the basketball shield. Auckland won the Haslam shield for shooting and, although its representatives succeeded in leaving with Otago tlio famous woodon spoon for athletics which Auckland had held almost continuously until last year, they won the tournament spoon for the lowest I' total points, scoring only BJ. ; ' Ideal Tennis Conditions Although rain threatened at times the cloudy weather was ideal for tennis. An attendance of about 600 spectators witnessed some interesting . games, although play was seldom brilliant. By winning tlio men's doubles and singles, the ladies' singlo and combined doubles, Canterbury had an easy .victory for the tennis cup, scoring eight points. The only other college to scoro was Victoria with two points. Barnett was outstanding in the men's division, winning the singles, and the doubles with B. A. Barrer. In tho singles It. A. Young was no match for * his team-mate's steadiness. Barnett's * speed on the court and anticipation frequently found his opponent out of position. The men's doubles between Barnett and Barrer, Canterbury, and J. J. Mc- -» Carthy and G. D. Whitcombe, Victoria, was much more closely contested. Splendid volleying by the Victoria pair V gave them' the first set at 6—3, but Barnett and Barrer then settled down, and their, steadiness wore down the c" opposition. Although McCarthy passed j Barnett several times with cross-court j'. drives and smashes, the Canterbury pair took the next two sets and the match, s The final of the ladies' singles, between Miss M. Sherris, Canterbury, and Miss/ R. Taylor, Auckland, was a particularly good contest. Both had similar 7 styles, playing largely from tho base- * line and seldom going in to the net. Miss Sherris varied her length well to * win-the first set at 6 —4, but Miss Taylor's superior backhand helped her to ,win the second set easily, 6 —l. The games alternated to four-all in the de- , ciding set before Miss Sherris' strong service assisted her to win the set and - .the match. ■M) Auckland Pair Defeated ; The Auckland pair, Miss Taylor and V iTI H. Wilson, failed to repeat their ■, early form in the final of the combined, doubles, and Miss Sherris' volleying and net work, together with Bars' rer's consistency, sufficed to give Can- <• terbury another victory in straight Bets. Both finalists in the ladies' doubles from Victoria. Last year's winners, Misses M. Line and C. Langmore, won the first set, 6 —4, and their opponents, Misses T. 11. Gill and S. Phillips, had won the second, 6—2, when the match had to be abandoned owing to the failing light. It is to be replayed in Wellington. Results are as follows: MEN'S SINGLES ° Fina?.—H. A.
