VESSEL STRANDED
JAPANESE CARGO SHIP ACCIDENT NEAR NOUMEA Advice has been received in Sydney of the stranding, near Noumea, of the Japanese steamer Juyo Maru. The accident occurred when the vessel was attempting to call at Noumea durina a severe cyclone, which raged on the night of April 9 and the following day, and she became stranded about two miles from shore. Advice received on April 12 stated the weather was still rough and the master was awaiting favourable conditions to refloat the vessel. It was understood she was not damaged to any extent and did not appear to be in danger. The Juyo Maru is a Japanese-built vessel oT 5458 tons and was constructed in 1026. At the time of the accident she was en route from Vancouver to Newcastle and Sydney. After calling at the Australian ports she was to have come to New Zealand to load scrap metal for Japan.
