EXCITING FINISHES EASY WIN FOR FRACAS KEEN TUSSLE IN CHIEF EVENT 1 [by telegraph—own correspondent]] CHRISTCfIURCII. Monday An interesting ruco was staged in the Kildaro High-weight Handicap at the opening of tho Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting to-day. Tea Garden essayed to win from tha barrier riso and only submitted in the last SO yards. Rocket and then Royal Love challenged him inside tho distance. Rocket gradually wearing Tea Garden .down to beat him by half-a-length, with Royal Love a little over that margin away. Strong Light was threo lengths back and was Jollowcd by Rothen, Pixio Gold and Wealth, with Juniper a bad last Red Manfred was, surprisingly, made a much better favourite, than Fracas lor tho Champagne Stakes. Nightly immediately rushed away in tho lead, but after having charge to the false rail retired and Fracas, who up to this stage bad been racing abreast with Red Manfred, shiH to the front and was not afterwards troubled, winning with tho greatest of easo from Red Manfred. Tho latter decisively beat Pegged Exchange, with Nightly beaten oil. Zeebrugge's Comfortable Win Zeebrugge had a comfortable win in tho Autumn Plate. "ITo was close up to Gland Review and Eupalor entering tho straight, and onco in lino for tho post gradually forged to the front and won without any pressure by two lengths from Chief Light. Water Polo mado a solid finishing run on tho rails and got up to beat Grand Review on tho post for third money. Kemal Pasha was next, followed by Polydare, Uohin Hood and Importance. An exciting struggle was witnessed over the last furlong of the Russley Plate. Juno tho Third, from the outside position, was tho first, to find his feet, and, quickly gaining a position near the fenco, was in front at the false rail. He did not last much longer, however, as Silent Flight was tho first to turn for home. Trivet gradually drew up to Silent Flight and inside tho distance Sweet Agnes joined in with n fast run on tho outside. A neck and neck finish ensued between tho trio, Trivet staying on to beat Sweet Agnes by a head, with Silent Flight only a neck away. Gayfcomo was threo lengths back in front of Juno tho Third. The Great Easter The Chokebore stable were again to tho forO in tho decision of tho Great Easter Handicap, Rebel Song narrowly . boating Cricket Bat after a memorable tusslo in tho straight. Great Star was rushed to the front at the end of two furlongs and quickly opened up a gap of two lengths from Cricket Bryt, Gustavo. Gay Crest. Kobe! Sonn. Ruling Light and Martian Chief, all running in close ordor. with Irish I-iancev and Ranelagh .tailing off. Great Star still held his advantngo turning into the straight, but when the distance was passed l>otli Cricket Bat and Rebel Song overhauled him and this pair settled down to a hard finish. Rebel Song was a neck in front 50 yards from tho post, and although Cricket Bat made a game effort Rebel Song prevailed by a head. Great Star was threo lengths away, a length in front of Gay Crest. Martian Chief, Ranelagh, Ruling Light, Princess Argosy and Irish Lancer followed in that order, with Gustavo bringing up the rear. Cottesmore, the favourito for the Papanui Handicap, scored a meritorious victory after another closely-contested finish. Crash led on to tho course proper from Money-, gran, Silver Streak and Cottesmore. Inside the distance Silver Streak drew level with Crash, while Cottesmore moved up oh tho outside. The last-named completed his task the best and wore down Silver Streak to beat him by a neck, with Crash half-a-length back. Moneygran was three lengths away in front of Manesho, Knocklong and Crauford. Concentrate Pulls Up Lame Another exciting finish was staged in .the Sockbnrp Handicap, the favourite on both machine.-!, Shatter, getting homo from tho little-fancied Ramo and Argentic. Itamo and Argentic were* abreast entering the straight, just in front of Eminent. Shatter and Tout le Monde. Argentic was in charge inside tho distance and a little further on was challenged by Shatter, who had his measure a few strides from the post. Ramo then m-.do a brilliant _ finishing run and got up to beat Argentic by a head, but suffered defeat by Shatter by a neck. True Shaft was two lengths back, half-a-length in front of Eminent, with Tout le Monde last. Concentrate pulled up lame. In Ihe Courtenay Handicap Metal Bird and Spoon entered the straight abreast in front of Might and Hurlmgham, but inside the distance the last-iiajned was in charge and went on tip record an easy victory from Wise 'Choice, who came from tho middle of the field to beat her stablemate.
