NOISY MOTOR-CYCLES

Sir, —As a rider of a comparatively noisy motor-bike may I bo permitted to take up cudgels on my own and my fellow cyclists' behalf? In Thursday's issue a correspondent who hides behind tho nom-de-plumo " Another Sufferer " suggests, sarcastically, tho building of special highways for us—having in view our ultimate extinction. So far so good, but would it nob be fur simpler to remove dwellings from tho sides of existing main highways into side streets ? Motoring through Taranaki whore roads aro good and speeds high, one has every now and again to slow down to crawling pace (15 m.p.li.) in deference to tho by-laws of small townships, and one wonders why the townspeople insisted on buildiug on tho main road. Among middle-agoa and elderly people who themselves never have been motor-cyclists exists a deep-rooted, illogical, unreasonable and unreasoning hatred of motor-cycles. Why should there be this persecution of young men ? Is it, as one of your correspondents suggests, jealousy? Whatever its cause it exists in every country. A motorcyclists' association largo enough to have political influenco is urgently needed against tho day when cruel legislation will bo enacted against us at tho instigation of all the " Sufferers " of suburbia. Richard S. Jabmn*.
