PETRIFYING LOGS

CREEK NEAR WELLINGTON A log jam in a stream in a little froqnontod valley at the hack oi' South Karon, near "Wellington, is creating 801110 interest, as it is evident that sonio of the logs are slowly being petrified. Those underneath arc buried deep in the bed of the stream, and have obviously been there for a great many years. Floods, when the stream was much wider and deeper, and when the surrounding hills were covered with bilsh, have probably accounted for the building of this natural barrier. Milling operations were once carried out in this part of Karori, but these ceased many years ago, and now there is no bush within miles. The more recent logs on top havo had grooves worn in them by small stones passing over them in flood tinio. Somo of tho logs are of considerable size.
