EASTER MONDAY

A PLEASANT HOLIDAY RACING AT ELLERSLIE SPORTS AND OUTINGS A typical Auckland autumn day, pleasantly cool but not cool enough to discourage anyone from socking the open air, mado Easter Monday a thoroughly enjoyable holiday for thousands of citizens. Passing clouds tempered the sun, and although a few light showers fell, tho weather was far from dull, and southerly breezes made tho air gently invigorating. Large crowds in light summer attire resorted to tho many beaches on the mainland and the various .islands, where -the lingering warmth of tho water mado bathing still a pleasure. Tho chief attraction for many was the second day of the Auckland Racing Club's autumn meeting at Ellerslio. As on Saturday, there was a satisfactorily largo attendance, and the mild weather encouraged some display of gay dresses on the lawn. The university inter-collego athletic meeting at the Domain attracted a large gathering of spectators. Basketball games were played on tho university courts in the morning, and the swimming events of tho tournament wore held at the Tepid Baths in tho evening. Tho cricket match between Auckland and Victoria Colleges was concluded at Eden Park. Tennis enthusiasts had much to enjoy in the Auckland association's hard-court championships, which were continued on the Windmill Road courts. An extra carriage was placed on the limited express which left at 7 p.m., making up tho total to the limit of eight. Tho train was filled to capacity, and an official said that many more applications had been received than could bo catered for. On the 7.40 express the seven carriages were well filled by reserved- bookings, and in addition numbers of those unable to obtain seating .accommodation on the limited express wero carried. Together the two expresses carried about 530 passengers. The heavy traffic caused a delay of half an hour in tho arrival of the express from Wellington last evening, the train reaching Auckland at 11.34. An earlier train was run from Frankton Junction to relievo the demand, and it had on board many city residents returning from visits to provincial centres over the Easter week-end. The last-min ;te rush for seats has been very heavy over the holidays, and, in addition, telephone inquiries have been dealt with unceasingly.
