CURIOUS PARADOX

VALUE OF A FLOOD MARLBOROUGH'S DRY SPELL The curious paradox presented itself at the last meeting of the Wairau River Board, remarks the Marlborough Express, in the board bonding its thoughts and energies as always in tho direction of flood prevention, while at tho back of the minds of the members existed tho quite definite impression that a good Hood over the Plain would do more good than harm to tho farming interests. Mr. H. J. Staco expressed that view quite definitely, and several members concurred in it. It was remarked that, for one thing, the land was now so dry that nothing short of exceptional and frequent rains or a. flood would restore the moisture lost in the course of a succession of dry seasons. Apart from tho replenishment of the subsoil moisture and the spreading of a good top-dressing of river silt, it was considered that an inundation would exterminate the myriads of grub and insect pests that have thriven during the dry weather.
