FROCKING AT ELLERSLIE

VOGUE FOR SIMPLICITY SLANTING LINE EFFECTS POPULARITY OF BLACK A cloud-flecked sky and intermittent sunshine that threatened once or twice to give way to rain were tho weather indications for Saturday, tho opening day of tho autumn race meeting at Ellerslie. Fortunately the threat did not materialise, and as tho day advanced the crisp air and autumn beauty of the racecourse made the outing a delightful one. Colour was a feature of tho gathering, the bright blues, reds, greens, amethyst and orange making a bravo show in keeping with tho brilliant colouring of the flower bods. Tho keynote of tho dressing was simplicity and utility combined with much that was attractive in cut, lino effect and material. The coat frock seems to have corno back into its own again, for there were many examples of this most useful garment in tweed and in woollen materials, such as Afgalaine, boucle and wool romaine. It was interesting to note how fow were tho frocks that woro cut on straight lines. Panels, yokes, insets, godots, capes and boleros all showed the slant line, and so, too, did the majority of the hats. Even tho orthodox coat and skirt could not entirely escape the influence of this whim of fashion and displayed it in tho diagonal weave of tho material. Striped materials havo by no means had their day, and several pencilstriped suits were to bo seen on Saturday in black or navy bluo materials, the stripe being very faint. It is possible that black has never had so great a vogue as at present, a great number of women wearing it either in coats and skirts, ensemble suits or in coat frocks. In a great many cases it was relieved with white, sometimes with a white fur wrap, a choker collar, or a waistcoat, a vest or a turnover collar, tho effect being dignified, attractive and in every case becoming. Hats were of all kinds, tho velvet , turban being extremely popular, and next to it the nose-dive shape, the shallow-crowned hat and tho felt hat with the deep sweep to one side. Among the younger set some charmingly jaunty hats in velvet and felt were to be seen perched well over on one side of the head, showing more of the hair than has hitherto been tho case.
