FIFTY YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD POINT BRITOMART LANDSLIDE The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of April 1", 1883: Shortly after midnight part of the retaining wall which Mr. John Lamb has been erecting for the past three years at his mill site, Point Britomart, gave way, and about 150 feet of it in length and 50 feet in height was precipitated on to his land and many of' the huge stones composing it were thrown across Fort Street. Fortunately at that hour there were no passers-by -otherwise there would probably have been loss of life. The debris amounts to about 2000 tons. At a meeting of the Harbour Board, to be held this afternoon, the tenders for a wharf at Pousonby are to be discussed. It is to be hoped that the reef projecting from Point Chevalier will be removed, so that the tide may flow along the south side and scour out the silt which is steadily accumulating. The proceedings last night in front of the recently-established Salvation Army Barracks at Dunedin were very rowdy and extra police assistance had to be obtained. As a parody on Salvation Army methods, a number of youths have formed a "Starvation" or '"Skeleton Army," and wear badges got up with skull and crossbones. Our latest European cables still tel. of Irish horrors. It seems that in spit* of all the outcry, the murderers of Lore Cavendish and Air. Burke find sympathisers in Ireland. The statement of ono of the men accused of the Pheonix I'ark murders reveals the connection between the Land League leaders and the assassins.
