USE OF CARRIER SYSTEM AUSTRALIAN DEVELOPMENTS A copper wire can become a wordy affair at times, according to tho annual report of the Australian PostmasterGeneral, Mr. A. Parkhill. He describes tho telegraph carrier system, which now permits of .'56 telegrams and one telephone conversation being transmitted simultaneously on ono copper wire circuit between Sydney apd Melbourne. Furthor progress m tho reconstruction of tho Commonwealth telegraphic service had been effected during tho year, and tho work is now nearing completion, tho report states. A telegraph carrier system was brought into operation between Sydney ami Brisbane, thus completing a system of telegraph carrier channels interlinking the whole of the State capitals on the mainland. Tho service and economic advantages of tho telegraph carrier installations wore well illustrated by the results obtained between Sydney and Melbourne. If this carrier system wero extended to its full capacity, no fewer than 88 telegrams and ono telephone conversation could be transmitted simultaneously. Analysis of tho latest availablo world statistics showed that tho public of Australia was maintaining its high position as a user of the telegraph service. The ratio of telegrams to population in tho Commonwealth is the highest in tho world, excepting New Zealand. The ratio in Western Australia alono exceeded that of New Zealand.
