SHOPLIFTING CHARGES
THREE WOMEN ACCUSED "Systematic shop-lifting has been going on and the police want to go further into the matter," said Detec-tive-Sergeant McHugh in the Police Court on Saturday, when three young women appeared on charges of stealing a large variety of goods from city stores. Iris Alma Jones, aged 24, married, was charged with stealing on April 13 two ladies' handbags and on or about April 7 a pair of ladies' shoes, two silk shirts, four men's singlets and men's underwear. The value of the articles was not assessed. Joint charges were laid against Dorothy Eileen Cripps, aged 24, married, and Irene Beryl Newport, aged 27, domestic, of stealing on April 13 a baby's velour coat and hat. valued at £1 Bs, two evpning gowns, valued at £lO 10s, underwear and wool, valued at £1 12s, and two ladies' hats, a baby's shawl, men's socks, women's hose and slippers, the ▼alue of which was not assessed. The articles are alleged to have been taken from different shops. In asking for a week's remand on all charges, Mr. McHugh said it was thought that four women had been working together. Bail on sureties of £SO was allowed by Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M. '
